RICHMOND – Del. Mamye BaCote, who represents parts of Hampton and Newport News in the Virginia House of Delegates, likely won't stand for re-election this year, she said Thursday.  BaCote said she hasn't made a final decision, but that she "probably won't" run again. She said during the 2013 elections that this would likely be her last term, and on Thursday BaCote said she'd like to see her grandsons play basketball more often. One grandson, Aaron BaCote, is a stand-out player for Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The other is in 10th grade.

Marcia Price, the daughter of Newport News Mayor McKinley Price, has said she'll run for BaCote's seat. She praised BaCote Thursday for "great service" to the 95th district.

BaCote, D-Newport News, said she's heard of a few people interested in running for the seat this year." But that's speculation," she said. BaCote, 75, was elected to the House of Delegates in 2003. Prior to that, she was on the Newport News City Council for about seven years. Her district leans heavily Democratic, though it's the subject of a pending lawsuit, brought by plaintiffs who say the House's Republican majority illegally packed it with minority voters to dilute their voting strength in adjacent districts. That suit could move the lines or delay elections, but the court has not yet delved deeply into the matter. All 100 seats in the House of Delegates, and all 40 seats in the state Senate, are up for re-election this year.
